ZEROING IN ON PROSTATE CANCER

Posted on: December 8, 2011

It’s could literally be a life or death discovery. Lawson researchers have developed a technique to help distinguish malignant from benign prostate tumours. Dr’s John Lewis and Len Luyt were able to illuminate signs of a malignant cells with a new molecular imaging probe. It uses an agent based on a growth hormone called ghrelin, a hormone that’s consumed by malignant cells at a much higher rate than normal prostate cells. When a fluorescent compound was added to the probe, malignant cancer cells sent out a signal that was five times stronger than normal cells.
