TREATING DIABETES

Posted on: July 18, 2012

Scientists from London have identified a way cells could be manipulated to treat diabetes. The team from Western University, Lawson Health Research and Children’s Hospital focused on insulin producing beta-cells and the role of a receptor called c-kit. One of the hallmarks of diabetes is the loss of beta cells, but boosting levels of c-kit produced improved cell function. Their study found that mice treated this way were protected from early onset diabetes. The hope is that this research will pave the way for ways to treat beta cells as a cure for both type one and type 2 diabetes.
